The last soul escaping

Description

Symbolism I found in this after I was done drawing:

Anxiety: Bugs crawling in the brain
Confusion: The labyrinth in the sun
Existential anxiety: The fact that the sun beams shines through the brain and causes the insects.
Sorrow: The black water

I spent some time thinking of a story, something that explains what's going on in this picture...

The city in the background is a place no citizen could escape from. It's surrounded by electric fences, with a poisonous sea on one side, and a great desert on the other.

The inhabitants knew nothing of other civilizations, where they would be or even if they existed at all. No one living in the city were old enough to know anything about when the city was isolated, or why.

The mysterious guards who'd been supplying the inhabitants with food and water for ages was suddenly gone, and eventually everybody died.

This is the last person to die. I don't believe in the soul, therefore my version of a ghost became a flying brain.
After spending it's last time alive completely alone, it begins it's journey across the sea to find answers to the questions everybody had been asking their whole lives.

To me it looks somewhat as a tribute to the "hard problem of consciousness"; the ants represent how a bottom-up process can create a unified top-down mechanical thinker.
Very good job on the limbic system.

(PS: I wish I could live in Sweden.)
